In 1939, the State Board of Education authorized the school to offer a bachelor of science degree course. The degree was first awarded to graduates at the spring commencement ceremony of 1942. By an act of the Tennessee Legislature on February 4, 1943, the school was renamed Austin Peay State College. In 1951, the National Commission authorized the college to award the Bachelor of Arts degree, and in 1952 it offered graduate studies leading to the Master of Education degree. At its November 1966 meeting, the State Board of Education granted the college university status, effective September 1, 1967.
